Department of Civil Engineering at Global Academy of Technology started in 2004 has grown continuously over the years and is now recognized as one of the research centres under Visvesvaraya Technological University. The department has developed strong links with construction industry and professional bodies. Besides outcome based education instruction at both UG and PG levels, the department is actively involved in consultancy and research projects in thrust areas of civil engineering providing useful advice for the betterment of society. With diversely qualified and experienced faculty members it has become possible to engage students effectively to turn them into industry ready professionals with strong commitment towards environment and ethics.

Department is a recognized research centre of VTU and many students are pursuing research in the areas of flood mitigation, ground water pollution, canal performance and urban sprawl impact studies. Department has conducted many workshops, seminars in the areas of Geo technology, river rejuvenation, ground water & subsurface safety, and recent trends in civil engineering. Funded research projects on coastal sedimentation dynamics, flood studies and consultancy projects for steel plants, Government of Karnataka, non government organizations etc., in the areas of water resources have provided much needed live project exposure to faculty and students. Department has strong association with professional bodies, viz, Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Indian Concrete Institute, Geological Society of India. Faculties of the department are active in publications in numerous international & national journals & conferences. These activities have provided fillip for academic excellence through institute-industry interaction. The Department is recognized as VTU Research Center, 12 Scholars are Registered.

The department to its credit has state-of-the-art multimedia classrooms, advanced civil engineering laboratories, very good computational facilities with application softwares like STAAD-Pro, SAPS/ETABS, ARC-GIS, Auto-Plotter for superior analysis and design of civil engineering structures. Strong association and membership with many professional bodies have further provisioned many more rare resources to involve in variety of multidisciplinary activities to widen the horizon of students and faculty beyond the scope of syllabus. The classrooms are epicenter of Creativity, giving the students the Joy of Learning.
Department of Civil Engineering at GAT has ten different laboratories dedicated to teaching and research. These laboratories are established for conducting experiments on small-to-large scale specimens as well as carrying out analytical research using high-computing systems. The research areas include structural engineering, material research, smart structures, structural dynamics, earthquake and fire engineering, and construction technology and management. These laboratories are being continuously modernized to accomplish research needs in the advanced field of structural engineering.

Department of Civil Engineering, has organized a National Level Workshop on” Innovative Design and Construction Practices in Highways, Bridges and Flyovers” from 15th to 17th March-2017.
Department of Civil Engineering, has organized a Seminar on SEISMIC ISOLATIONin Association with The Structural Engineers World Congress (SEWC) and Japanese Society of Seismic Isolation (JSSI) to be held on 30th, 31st October’17 and 1st November-2017
Department of Civil Engineering, has organized one day seminar on “URBAN ROAD SAFETY –CHALLENGES AND WAY FORWARD” on 11th November 2017 in association with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)
Department of Civil Engineering, has organized a “NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM & WORKSHOP ON E-WASTE MANAGEMENT” on 11th & 12th Jan.2019 under the aegis of International Society for Waste Management, Air & Water (ISWMAW) & Bangalore Environment Trust.
Innovations in Teaching and Learning
ACES is a student body comprising of civil engineering students. The departmental activities- cultural and technical are organised by the ACES in co-ordination with the faculty of the department. This association is formed to encourage students to initiate, organize and implement various events and activities throughout their engineering years, to build managerial and leadership qualities among the students. ACES also include ICI and ACCE student chapter.
Recently ACES organised a Guest lecture on ‘E-waste management: Sustainability and interdisciplinary aspects’ by Mr.Biswajit Debnath from Jadavpur University on 08.08.2018. They also welcomed 3rd semester batch to the civil department by organizing a welcome activity for the batch.
On 05th of September 2018, ACES team organized events for department of Civil Engineering Faculties technical and cultural event on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
Department of Civil Engineering has closely associated with many of the industries in the form of consultancy and research works. The civil engineering students are actively participates in most of the industrial projects and gets an experience of their practical training. The involvement of the students for various Traffic and Transportation studies (projects of DULT, BBMP) and geological & hydro geological studies are worth mentioning.
Cycle Day, an initiative by the Karnataka government’s Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), is supported by multiple communities, city-level organisations, citizen volunteers and government organisations (Bangalore Traffic Police, BBMP). It is an attempt to increase awareness on the benefits of cycling for health and the environment. The objective is fairly simple – to promote cycling as a green mode of transport and get more people on their bicycles in order to reduce pollution and traffic in the city.
Taking the spirit, RR Nagar Community is started celebrating cycle day. The First Cycle day was celebrated on Oct. 28th 2018. Global Academy of Technology extends their support as Community partners for the event with Civil engineering students as major volunteers. Few snaps of the event are shown below.
DULT, GoK’s eco-friendly mobility initiative, the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) under the brand Trin – Trin inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri H.D. Kumaraswamy on 4th March, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Vidhana Soudha. A cycle rally flagged off by the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara. Department of Civil Engineering students were active participants and volunteers for the event.
Students of VIth semester were taken to Torekadenahalli Water Treatment Plant on 14th and 15th of March 2019.
