A visit to Rohde and Schwarz, India was organised by the Industry Institute Interaction Cell on Nov 14th 2018. The visit included Dr. Geetha Prakash, Director, III Cell and Prof Rashmi along with 18 students from CSE, ISE, ECE and Mech Depts.
Rohde & Schwarz is a leading supplier of solutions in the fields of Test and Measurement, Broadcasting, Radio monitoring and Radiolocation as well as Mission-critical Radio communications. For more than 80 years, company has been developing, producing and marketing a wide range of electronic products. R&S India has ISO 9001:2000 certified Quality Management Systems and ISO 17025 Accreditation by National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its Central Repairs & Calibration Laboratory in Bangalore.
This visit was facilitated and supported by the Headquarters in Munich where Dr. Geetha Prakash , Director, III Cell had visited in October 2018.
The visit included the Office Tour with a visit to the R&D Dept., Calibration Dept, Service dept and Testing facility. There was also a presentation and a demonstration ov their products.
The testing includes Protocol testing for 3G, 4G standards, LTE protocols, functionalities Chipset verification (major clients – Qualcomm and Intel) and Network Simulation
In the service division which is ISO certified they repair circuit boards from all over the country and configure them based on their customer’s requirements. The R and D section mainly works on communication devices and tests various chips.
In the automated Calibration facility they calibrate different types of electronic devices like RF circuits, oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analysers.
The visit was followed by a presentation which consisted of a brief history of the company and the various devices manufactured by them. Then a small talk on different electronic devices manufactured by the company was given. Their features and applications were also discussed. The presentation also covered details of how R & S is in the automotive sector through infotainment systems, RADOMS for cars and R&D related to GNS Systems
Some electronic devices were also demonstrated such as their programmable signal generator which has a touch screen and many useful features like FFT conversion. demonstration of their digital oscilloscope was also given where they showed how to operate it and some basic signals were shown such as square wave and sync pulse. FFT of sync pulse was also shown. To show the working of their oscilloscope, they connected to the radio and used modulation operations on it.
Rhode and Schwarz has a variety of electronic devices which can be used for research and educational purposes. The Bangalore division mainly works on electronics devices, also they test chips which are important for communication devices such as Broadcasting, mobile communication, and Radio monitoring / Radiolocation.
There are various fields branching under electronics and communication engineering and many opportunities are present for students in the various core sectors such as testing, designing, calibration, R and D , automotive etc.
